The short answer: Use the fuel approved by the manufacturer for your specific model. Just because a fuel works in one diesel heater does not automatically mean it is approved for all diesel heaters.
Standard diesel – EN590
EN590 diesel is the common standard for many diesel-powered heaters. Always check your heater’s manual and use fuel that is appropriate for the temperature conditions.
Can a diesel heater run on HVO100?
Some newer diesel heaters are explicitly approved for HVO100. For instance, AUTOTERM states in the current documentation for the AIR 2D, AIR 4D, and AIR 9D that these models can use diesel according to EN590 or HVO100 according to EN15940, depending on the ambient temperature.
However, this is a model-specific approval. If you have a Sunster, VEVOR, Webasto, 1852, or another brand, you should check the documentation for that specific model before changing fuel.
What about GTL?
GTL is often mentioned alongside other paraffinic diesel types. You should not assume that approval for HVO100 automatically means that GTL is also approved. Look for an explicit statement in the manufacturer's manual or technical documentation.
The fuel is only one part of the operation
Starting problems, smoke, and poor combustion can also be caused by voltage drops, air in the fuel system, incorrect pump installation, restricted air intake, exhaust issues, or the need for service. Therefore, you should not change fuel types as a random troubleshooting method.
