Flexible or rigid solar panel for a boat – which should you choose?

I don't choose the type of panel based on appearance alone. On a boat, it's about space, surface, shade, heat, weight, and how the panel can be mounted without creating new problems.

Flexible panel

A flexible or semi-flexible panel can be practical where weight and installation height need to be low, or where a traditional aluminum-framed panel is difficult to place. However, mounting requirements vary. Some panels must not be bent very much, some must not be walked on, and the surface can affect heat dissipation.

Rigid panel with frame

A rigid panel requires more space and physical mounting, but on the other hand, it can often be mounted with air circulation around the back and be easier to replace without having to deal with glued surfaces. Whether it is the best solution depends on the boat's construction.

Shade is more important than many think

The mast, boom, radar, antennas, and lines can cast shadows on part of the panel. Therefore, I look at the specific placement – not just the panel's nominal wattage.

My five questions before choosing

  1. How much continuous area do you have?
  2. Is the surface flat or curved?
  3. Can the panel get ventilation according to the manufacturer's requirements?
  4. Where will shadows typically fall?
  5. Does the panel need to be easily removable or replaceable?
