The four Garmin solutions resemble each other in some basic functions, but they are built for different ways of using VHF. I therefore choose based on location, number of control stations, and whether AIS reception should be integrated into the radio.
VHF 115i
The 115 series is a traditional fixed-mount VHF with up to 25 W transmit power, built-in GPS, Class D DSC, and NMEA 2000 connectivity for compatible marine instruments.
VHF 215i
The 215 series also has 25 W, GPS, DSC, and NMEA 2000, but features a more flexible microphone/handset solution and supports an additional compatible wired handset.
VHF 215i AIS
The 215i AIS adds an AIS receiver. This means the radio can receive AIS targets and pass the information on to a compatible system. It is not the same as an AIS transponder, which also broadcasts your own boat's AIS data.
VHF 315
The 315 is a modular black-box solution. Garmin supplies it with a wired GHS handset and active speaker, and the system can be built up for multiple stations. It is interesting when the radio itself needs to be tucked away, while the controls are placed where they are used.
My short guide to decision-making
- Simple fixed station: start with 115i.
- More flexible operation: look at 215i.
- VHF with built-in AIS reception: 215i AIS.
- Black-box and multiple control stations: 315.
Also check the antenna, antenna cable, GPS conditions, power supply, and NMEA 2000 before ordering. A good radio with a bad antenna installation is still a bad VHF solution.
