How to build a reliable water system in a boat or camper

A good water system is about more than just the pump. It’s about the entire setup. Here, I’ll show you how to build a reliable system that delivers good pressure, fewer problems, and a solution that simply works.

Build a reliable system like this: Tank → Filter → Pump → (Pressure tank) → Water system

1. Start with the water tank

It all starts with your water tank. It must be clean, correctly installed, and positioned so the pump can easily draw water from it.

• Avoid suction hoses that are too long
• Make sure the connection is sealed
• Ideally, position the pump close to the tank

2. Always use a filter before the pump

I always recommend installing a filter before the pump. It protects the pump from dirt and significantly extends its service life.

3. Choose the right pressure pump

The pump should suit your needs. A pump that’s too small gives poor pressure, while one that’s too large uses more power than necessary.

• 7–10 L/min → small systems
• 10–15 L/min → everyday use
• 15–20+ L/min → shower and greater comfort

4. Consider a pressure tank (important)

A pressure tank makes a huge difference to comfort. It provides a steady flow of water and reduces how often the pump starts and stops.

5. Use the right hoses and fittings

Many problems are caused by hoses that are too small or poor connections.

• Use the correct size (don’t use hoses that are too small)
• Make sure all connections are tight
• Avoid kinks in the hoses

6. Install the pump correctly

The pump should be mounted securely, ideally with vibration damping.

• Secure mounting
• Rubber feet or vibration damping
• Easy access for maintenance
