How to build a stable water system in a boat or camper

A good water system is not just about the pump. It's about the entire setup. Here, I'll show you how to build a stable system that provides good pressure, fewer problems, and a solution that simply works.

💡 Quick overview

A stable system is built like this: Tank → Filter → Pump → (Accumulator Tank) → Water installation

1. Start with the water tank

Everything starts with your water tank. It must be clean, correctly installed, and positioned so the pump can easily draw water.

  • Avoid excessively long suction hoses
  • Ensure a tight connection
  • Ideally, place the pump close to the tank

2. Always use a filter before the pump

I always recommend installing a filter before the pump. This protects the pump from dirt and significantly extends its lifespan.

✔ Protects the pump
✔ Ensures better operation
✔ Reduces risk of malfunctions

3. Choose the right pressure water pump

The pump must suit your needs. A pump that's too small will result in poor pressure – one that's too large will lead to unnecessary power consumption.

  • 7–10 L/min → small systems
  • 10–15 L/min → general use
  • 15–20+ L/min → shower and high comfort

4. Consider an accumulator tank (important)

An accumulator tank makes a huge difference to comfort. It provides a consistent water flow and reduces pump start/stop cycles.

✔ More stable pressure
✔ Less noise
✔ Longer pump lifespan

5. Use the correct hoses and fittings

Many problems are caused by hoses that are too small or poor connections.

  • Use correct dimensions (not hoses that are too small)
  • Ensure tight connections
  • Avoid kinks in hoses

6. Correct pump installation

The pump must be mounted stably and ideally with vibration dampening.

  • Secure mounting
  • Rubber feet or dampening
  • Easy access for service

Typical mistakes I see again and again

  • Pump too small
  • No filter before the pump
  • Incorrect hoses
  • Poor installation
  • Expectation of excessively high comfort

This is what a good system looks like

Tank → Filter → Pump → Accumulator Tank → Taps / Shower
