Victron MultiPlus or separate inverter and battery charger?

A MultiPlus is not just an inverter. Victron combines a pure sine wave inverter, battery charger, and automatic AC transfer switch in one unit. This can be a powerful solution, but not necessarily the simplest in every way.

What the MultiPlus does

When shore power or a generator is connected, the MultiPlus can charge the battery and power AC loads. If the AC source is lost, the inverter section can take over for the connected loads. On compatible installations, PowerAssist can supplement a limited shore power or generator supply with energy from the battery.

When I consider a MultiPlus

  • You want to combine an inverter and charger in one installation.
  • You have multiple 230 V consumers and want automatic switching.
  • You want to control how much power is drawn from a limited shore power source.
  • You are building a larger Victron system with monitoring and integration.

When separate units might make sense

If you only need a smaller inverter or already have a well-functioning battery charger, separate units can be simpler. It can also make it possible to replace one function without changing the rest. The choice therefore depends on the system – not because one solution is always the best.

Sizing

Consider the inverter's continuous power, the appliances' peak current, the battery/BMS current limit, cabling, fuses, and the charger's amperage. On 12 V systems, the current quickly becomes high with large 230 V loads.
